Winning protections for our community starts with local victories. Equality Florida has led anti-discrimination campaigns in some cities, while providing staff, training, volunteer support and technical assistance in others. Since Equality Florida began, more than 20 local safe schools, domestic partnership, and anti-discrimination policies have passed in Florida.

Basic Human Rights

Goal:

Secure protections for the LGBT community against discrimination in employment, housing and public accommodations throughout Florida.

Background:

A majority of fair-minded people do not realize that, in most of Florida, a gay person can be legally:

• Fired,
• Denied housing as a renter or homeowner,
• Asked to leave a restaurant, and
• Denied a hotel room with their partner.

The vast majority of Americans believe that basic human rights, such as a employment, food and shelter should NOT be denied to people based on their sexual orientation.
