Online discrimination reporting for victims and their families.

The tragic and predictable result to anti-gay hate speech is violence targeting our community. We work closely with local and state law enforcement agencies to ensure hate crimes are fully investigated and prosecuted. Equality Florida provides anonymous online discrimination reporting for victims and their families.

GOAL

Equality Florida’s seeks to work with local and state law enforcement agencies to ensure hate crimes investigated and prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

BACKGROUND

The tragic and predictable consequence of anti-gay hate speech is violence targeted at the LGBT community.

According to the Florida Attorney General, recent hate-crimes statistics show “a clear pattern of growth in hate-crime incidents motivated by the victim’s sexual orientation.”

Hate crimes based on sexual orientation are increasing by 30% annually in Florida and currently account for 20 percent of all hate crimes, surpassing religion as the second highest category. Race is still the most common motivation, accounting for 49.1 percent of hate crimes.

The Attorney General has further noted a very troubling trend, “In the last four years, Florida law enforcement agencies reported more hate crimes motivated by sexual orientation than the combined total for the first eight years of hate crimes reporting.
